WVU Football Trivia
Names, places & events of Mountaineer Football

Since Mountaineer Field opened in 1980, one professional football game has been played there. Who were the NFL teams that participated and when was the game played?

On August 22, 1998, Bill Cowher's Pittsburgh Steelers squared off against Dan Reeves' Atlanta Falcons in a pre-season game at Mountaineer Field. 62,000 fans watched the Steelers win 28-22. The game was billed as an experiment of sorts, as it was thought that the Steelers were looking for a possible location to play if construction on their new stadium, set to begin in June of 1999, wasn't completed in time to start the 2001 season. The Steelers had done the very same thing 30 years earlier. A game was played in 1968 against the Cincinnati Bengals at Old Mountaineer Field, and Three Rivers Stadium opened two years later in 1970.

Of all the coaches who have paced the West Virginia sideline for at least two seasons, only one had a losing record for each and every year he led the Old Gold and Blue.
Who was he?

When Bobby Bowden bolted for Florida State after the 1975 season, he was replaced by his offensive coordinator, Frank Cignetti. Cignetti coached WVU from 1976 through 1979, and each season ended with a losing record. His record in Morgantown stands at 17-27. Cignetti fought a rare form of cancer in 1978-79, and after his dismissal from WVU he resumed coaching in 1986 at his alma mater, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At IUP he found the head coaching success he didn't enjoy at West Virginia, leading the Crimson Hawks to a 182-50-1 record and 28 post-season appearances- a Division II coaching record.

Who were the first pair of brothers to score an offensive and defensive touchdown for the Mountaineers in the same game?

On 25 September 1993, the Mountaineers clobbered the Missouri Tigers 35-3 in a soaking rain at Mountaineer Field. The first score of the day came in the form of a second quarter touchdown pass, Jake 'The Snake' Kelchner to tight end Charles Washington from 4 yards away. Later in the fourth quarter, to complete the Mountaineer scoring, brother Vann Washington picked a Missouri pass and returned the rock 27 yards for six to push the West Virginia lead to 35-0. The two touchdowns marked the first time in WVU football history that two brothers had scored on offense and defense in the same game. In blowing the game open the Mountaineer defense scored touchdowns on consecutive plays from scrimmage- Washington's interception return came just 8 seconds after Mike Collins had stripped a Missouri fumble and raced 97 yards for a score.

Against which team and in what year did the Mountaineers first beat a top 25 ranked opponent?

YIPPEEE--- W.V.U. 16, PITT 0
The sports page of the October 26, 1952 edition of the Charleston Daily Mail says it best as the West Virginia Mountaineers beat the #18 ranked Pitt Panthers 16-0. The WVU victory, a day earlier on October 25, 1952, was the Mounties first ever against a ranked opponent. West Virginia's win ended a four-game slide against Pitt, and the shutout was the Mountaineers' first since 1945.
