WVU Football Trivia Names, places & events of Mountaineer Football
While the playing surface at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium has always been covered with an artificial turf, the
surface at 'Old' Mountaineer Field was, for the longest time, natural grass. When was synthetic 'AstroTurf' first installed
at 'Old' Mountaineer Field?
The carpet, or 'AstroTurf', was installed at 'Old' Mountaineer Field in 1969. Approximately 82,900 square feet of the
synthetic material was layed by the Monsanto Co. of St. Louis at a cost of $233,000. The General Paving Co. of Morgantown
had excavated the sod field prior to turf installation and installed an asphalt base at a cost of $104,500.
Before groundbreaking started in 1979, what facility occupied the space currently known to all as Mountaineer
Field?

The site selected for the location of 'New' Mountaineer Field was a piece of land situated between the new College of Law
campus and the University Medical facility (Ruby Memorial Hospital did not exist at the time) on the Evansdale campus. The area that would become Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium was previously a golf course, referred to by Wikipedia as the Morgantown Country Club.
The Mountaineer team of 2001 finished the season with a dissappointing 3-8 record, but at season's end the team did manage to rank first nationally in what statistical category?
The eight man front defense of new defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian finished the 2001 season ranked first nationally in pass defense, allowing an average of 136.7 yards per game. However, most opponents found it easier to run the ball against WVU, and a new system with some injuries to veteran players left the Mounties weak against the run- especially long runs. By the start of the 2002 season, both Elmassian and the eight man front were gone. Todd Graham and Jeff Casteel were named as co-defensive coordinators (Graham for scheme, Casteel for personnel), and the West Virginia 3-3-5 defense was born.
