WVU Football Trivia
Names, places & events of Mountaineer Football

Who was the first Mountaineer quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a single season?

When Bernie Galiffa passed for 194 yards in a 50-24 thrashing of Virginia Military Institute on November 11, 1972, his season total through 10 games of the 1972 season reached 2,045 yards, making him the first quarterback in Mountaineer football history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a single season. Galiffa finished the 1972 campaign with 2,496 yards through the air, which through the 2007 season still ranks second all-time in West Virginia football history to Marc Bulger's 3,607 yards in 1998.

Only once has a Mountaineer player
both thrown a touchdown pass and caught
a touchdown pass in the same game.
Who was the player, and when was the game?

When the Mountaineers destroyed the Northern Illinois Huskies 47-14 on September 6, 1986, John Talley, brother of former WVU All-American Darryl Talley, became the first and so far only player in the modern history of West Virginia football to both throw and catch a touchdown pass in the same game. Talley caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Mike Timko early in the second quarter, and then he threw a 6-yard TD pass to tailback Undra Johnson later in the third quarter.

When was the last game lost by the Mountaineers without giving up an offensive touchdown?

On October 2, 2004, Virginia Tech beat West Virginia 19-13, and the Hokies scored all of their 19 points without scoring an offensive touchdown. Tech kicker Brandon Pace nailed four field goals, and Vincent Fuller returned a blocked Mountaineer field goal attempt 74 yards for a special teams touchdown.

When was the last game won by the Mountaineers without scoring an offensive touchdown?

When West Virginia defeated Syracuse 15-7 on September 4, 2005, the game marked just the second time in 30 years (last time vs. Richmond, 9-6, in 1976) that WVU beat an opponent without scoring an offensive touchdown. Eric Wicks (for six!) returned a pick 31 yards for a defensive touchdown, Ernest Hunter sacked Orange quarterback Perry Patterson for a safety, and Pat McAfee added two field goals to complete the Mountaineer scoring.
