WVU 2008 Football Schedule Notes:
The Mountaineers open the season at home against Villanova, a Big East school in most every sport except football. The August 30th match-up is the first against the Div. 1-AA Wildcats since 1977, when Villanova won 41-36 in Morgantown.
The annual game against Maryland will take a two-year break starting this season as the Terps opted out to play a home-and-home series against Cal. Taking Maryland's place on the WVU football schedule for the next two years will be the Colorado Buffaloes of the Big 12 Conference. Like West Virginia, Colorado also won its game against the Oklahoma Sooners last year, winning that game at home. The Mountaineers travel to Boulder this year and play the Buffs on a Thursday night ESPN nationally televised match-up.
The Friends of Coal Bowl rivalry returns to Morgantown this season for the third game in the intrastate series. West Virginia looks to continue its unblemished all-time record against Marshall in the series that WVU now leads 7-0.
Unlike a year ago, WVU enjoys the month of October at home, and the final game of the three in a row in Morgantown is the much anticipated battle with the Auburn Tigers. Like the game with Colorado, this will be the first time the Mountaineers have faced Auburn, and the game is likewise a Thursday night ESPN broadcast. Auburn replaces Mississippi State of the SEC from last year's schedule, and the Mountaineers will return the visit to Auburn next year.
The meat of the Big East part of the WVU football schedule is in November, with games at Connecticut, at home for Cincinnati, at Louisville, and at Pitt. The 101st Backyard Brawl, to be played on the day after Thanksgiving in front of a national TV audience, will be nothing short of a grudge match this year. And once again, just as last year, the outcome of the game could determine WVU's post-season plans.
The regular season finale could play out to be the biggest game of the year- at home against South Florida. Big East, BCS, and maybe even national championship possibilities could hinge on this game. How well the Bulls play in the cold December 6th weather may be a factor, and Pat White will probably play this game like a man on a mission. The long and short of this game is simple- WVU must win. A third consecutive loss to South Florida is not an option.
