steelers at wvu
Since Mountaineer Field opened in 1980, one professional football game has been played there. Who were the NFL teams that participated and when was the game played?
On August 22, 1998,
Bill Cowher's Pittsburgh Steelers squared off against Dan Reeves' Atlanta Falcons in a pre-season game at Mountaineer Field. 62,000 fans watched the Steelers win 28-22. The game was billed as an experiment of sorts, as it was thought that the Steelers were looking for a possible location to play if construction on their new stadium, set to begin in June of 1999, wasn't completed in time to start the 2001 season. The Steelers had done the very same thing 30 years earlier. A regular season game was played in 1968 against the Cincinnati Bengals at 'Old' Mountaineer Field, and Three Rivers Stadium opened just two years later in 1970.
