Of all the coaches who have paced the West Virginia sideline for at least two seasons, only one had a losing record for each
and every year he led the Old Gold and Blue. Who was he?
When Bobby Bowden bolted for Florida State after the 1975 season, he was replaced by his offensive coordinator, Frank Cignetti. Cignetti coached WVU from 1976 through 1979, and each season ended with a losing record. His record in Morgantown stands at 17-27. Cignetti fought a rare form of cancer in 1978-79, and after his dismissal from WVU he resumed coaching in 1986 at his alma mater, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At IUP he found the head coaching success he didn't enjoy at West Virginia, leading the Crimson Hawks to a 182-50-1 record and 28 post-season appearances- a Division II coaching record.
